About MERC

The Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) is a not-for-profit initiative that promotes safety in the mining industry while connecting professionals and volunteers committed to emergency preparedness and teamwork. MERC has grown into a respected, world-class event attracting teams from across Western Australia and beyond, featuring realistic scenarios that test skills in mine rescue, medical response, firefighting, and crisis management.

This year’s event will take place from 27–29 November at Langley Park in the City of Perth, Western Australia.

We're streamlining things

This year, MERC has introduced a new online event management platform to make registration smoother and easier for everyone.

As it’s our first time using the system, we’d really appreciate your feedback. If anything could be clearer or work better, please let us know so we can keep improving the experience for future events.

How the online registration process works

We invite you to nominate your team for MERC 2026 through this portal. Please note that positions are limited to 18 teams, so we encourage early submissions.

Nominations close on 30 April 2026 and, shortly after, teams will be notified of the outcome of their application.

Why Support MERC?

The event provides immersive, hands-on training for volunteer mine rescue teams through high-pressure scenarios covering road crash rescue, hazardous materials, confined space, vertical rescue, firefighting, team readiness, incident management and advanced first aid. Teams are judged on applying best-practice procedures and overall rescue discipline performance.

The event welcomes industry leaders, mining families, and the wider Western Australian community to watch live demonstrations and support teams. MERC welcomes a large number of attendees each year, including government officials, senior mining executives, family, friends and members of the wider community.

The standard team entry fee includes participation for up to eight (8) team representatives comprising:

• one (1) team manager
• six (6) team members
• one (1) reserve

If your team includes additional members, such as reserves or a 2IC team manager, an additional attendance fee of $500.00 per person will apply.

This fee covers merchandise, catering, sundowner and awards event tickets, as well as associated administrative costs. 

Please note, the overall number of team members is capped at 10 per team.

MERC welcomes international teams to compete in the event.

Please note that international team participation is limited to a maximum of two teams per year.

Additional fees may apply for international teams if there are requirements for equipment, resources, or administrative support.
